Project: Doña Terra - cooking classes in the local traditional cuisine
His name is Walter Gregorio Lool Alvarez and he runs both a restaurant outside of town and a café near the center which sells bread from the nearby town of Totonicapán. He has 8 employees.
Walter describes part of his entreprenuerial passion as coming from events like this one: “I gave the guy his salary for the week and he turned around and walked up to his wife, who was waiting on the street, and gave her all of it. Later that day I saw them walking from the market with two bags full of food. I felt so good that I was able to provide support for them.”
While Walter could have worked in Guatemala City for significantly more money (he was offered a good position) he tells us that, "I thought about it but I want to stay here with my family. It’s not all about money. You see, I made a lot of money in the USA but I don’t want to life that lifestyle again.”
So now Walter wants to expand his business by providing cooking classes, both to locals as well as to tourists. He believes that by growing his business in this way he can give back to the community by creating jobs. FTF is extremely honored to have an amazing entrepreneur join our growing family of Impresarios.
NEWS AND UPDATES:
We are starting by marketing their business to local language schools and hostels as a day trip package (i.e. - Xela and the surrounding towns).
We will also be creating an online presence from them through google maps, a website and TripAdvisor.
