From the Field: Fighting Myself
The greatest challenge I've faced in Guatemala, bar none, has been myself. At first I thought it was all the cultural differences between the US and Guatemala. For example, transportation is tricky – you have to find pickups to get around. Food is totally different and I've eaten my weight in tortillas. But when you drill down and distill these experiences, it really comes down to a grudge match between what I want and expect and reality.I firmly believe this is one of the most important aspects of FTF's work here in Guatemala; we are taking the time to break down our preconceptions and our desire to fashion everything into a semblance of our own experiences. It's time to realize I know nothing. When I make that happen, maybe I can learn how to help those around me. Until then, I'm just another Gringo who thinks he knows it all.
